Help & Tips for installing and maintaining

Wooden doors and Windows:

As timber is a natural product it is subject to change, due to variations in humidity and temperature. It is very important to seal all products with a sealer to protect them against moisture penetration and cement-mortar stains. Doors exposed to extreme conditions cannot be expected to last as long as doors that are semi-exposed. An exterior wooden door is manufactured for semi-exposed application. Doors and frames should be protected (see treatment) from sunlight and extreme variations in temperature and humidity to ensure lasting beauty and stability.

BEFORE BUILDING IN: ENSURE THAT:-
  1. Your order was manufactured according to your plan and specifications, when the delivery is made.
  2. Product faults and errors in description or quantity are reported to us in writing within 7 days of delivery.
STORAGE OF WOODEN DOORS AND WINDOWS:-

  1. As timber is a natural product, absorption / loss of moisture will occur according to prevailing environmental conditions.
  2. All wooden doors, frames and windows should therefore be stored in a dry and well ventilated place to protect them from excessive moisture, heat and insects.
  3. Newly built, plastered and painted buildings must be avoided because of the excessive moisture and humidity present. The doors and frames must be stacked horizontally, well cleared from the floor on evenly spaced bearers. A cover should be placed over the top and bottom door to further protect them and allow for adequate ventilation.
  4. All products are to be stored on three or more bearers, on a level surface, in a well-ventilated dry area and out of direct sunlight.
  5. Handle with clean gloves, and do not drag doors across one another or other surfaces.
  6. All surfaces that will be in direct contact with walls or concrete should be waterproofed by applying a coat of primer paint or timber sealant...
  7. All products must be sealed with a sealer to protect them against moisture penetration and cement-mortar stains.

DURING BUILDING ENSURE THAT:-

  1. Products are correctly supported to prevent bending of the sill and the top rail.
  2. Lintels are set up with sufficient clearance above the products to prevent any pressure on them...
  3. The products are set up level and square.
  4. Sills of doorframes and sliding doors are made to finish flush with the final floor level.
  5. Doorframes, sliding doors and windows are properly protected against building operations.

AFTER BUILDING ENSURE THAT:-

  1. All glazing beads removed are painted or varnished all round as well as in the rebates. Attend to the end-grain of the glazing beads in particular. Glazing beads should be replaced in the same positions they were before being removed.
  2. Back putty is pressed out very smoothly.
  3. Outside window sills are built in underneath the bottom of the window and not against it.
  4. All joinery surfaces are sealed with a recommended exterior grade sealant, according to sealant manufacturer's specifications.
  5. Doors are sealed properly on the top and bottom by drowning the end-grain in the sealant. The openings at the mortise and tenon joints are filled with silicone if applicable.

INSTALLATION OF DOORS:-

  1. Sliding and folding doors should be installed by McCoy’s recommended installers.
  2. Do not install doors until concrete floors, foundations and plaster walls are dry. If doors are stored at job site, they should be sealed on all six sides before storage. See Treatment below.
  3. The utility or structural strength of the door must not be impaired in the fitting of the door, the application of hardware, or cutting and altering the door for lights, louvers, panel or any other special details.
  4. Before finishing, remove handling marks or effects of exposure to moisture with a thorough, final sanding over all surfaces of the door, and clean before applying door treatment.
  5. When glass is installed in a door, make sure that the rebates, as well as around the glazing beads including the mitered ends, are treated with a sealant.
  6. Regular maintenance of external doors should be carried out to prevent breakdown of paint film and to protect the timber from deterioration.
  7. Do not trim more than 60mm from the height of the door. Trim up to 20 mm from the top of the door and up to 40 mm off the bottom.
  8. To use mortise locks with any stile and rail door, contact your distributor about lock locations. Do not fit locks or handles at the lock rail.
  9. A warp shall be considered a defect when exceeding 3mm per meter on the concave face of the door when measured with a straight edge.
  10. All flush bolts must be located after fitting to limit movement. On tall pairs of doors, both leaves (i.e. fixed leaf and opening leaf) should be bolted at the top. The fixed leaf should also be bolted at the bottom.

TREATMENT:-

  1. All our products are supplied untreated.
  2. An appropriate exterior timber treatment such as Silkwood protects the door from UV-rays and fungal attack and acts as a final finish to the door.
  3. It is important that all timber products are sealed with an approved sealant, without delay and prior to fitting.
  4. Ensure that all surfaces are sealed.
  5. With regard to Doors, after final trimming is completed, be sure to seal all 6 (six) sides with a recommended exterior grade sealant, according to the sealant Manufacturer's instructions. Give special attention to the top and bottom of the door.
  6. For resealing, surfaces must be prepared according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  7. Care must be taken to ensure that all cavities, joints and edges are properly penetrated with sealant to ensure that excessive loss or absorption of moisture is avoided.
  8. For good maintenance of the door and frame, the products must be frequently resealed according to its exposure after installation. Refer to the sealant manufacturer’s instructions.
